Our 2018 whale watching season has begun!

April 10, 2018 Comments (0)

A new whale watching season is here! We have been avidly watching whale reports and sightings over the winter - counting down the days until April 1st! Reports of killer whales were plentiful during our offseason and we are expecting this trend to continue. As we at Wild Whales were all anxiously anticipating the start to our season, we were thrilled to hear of a sperm whale sighting in our local waters! The whale was spotted just a few weeks ago and marked the first sperm whale reported in British Columbia since 1984. Our fir... read more

Fall is AMAZING for Whales this year!

September 28, 2017 Comments (0)

It is the end of September and we at Wild Whales Vancouver have seen killer whales and/or humpback whales every single day we have gone out. The rarely seen and critically endangered Southern Residents have made a return in recent weeks and we hope they are getting some Chinook Salmon as they feed in the Strait of Georgia. Humpback sightings are increasing as many are beginning to move through the area to their winter breeding grounds. Not only that but migratory species such as sea lions are coming to their haul outs. There i... read more

Welcome our new open concept vessel “Eagle Eyes”!

July 2, 2017 Comments (0)

Summer is finally here and so is the newest addition to our fleet, an open concept, twin hulled, hydroplaning catamaran: "Eagle Eyes". We are excited about our new vessel and the fact that we are seeing whales on 93% of our trips since our season started. One of our best seasons! We are seeing orca (killer whales) about 80% of the time and humpback whale sightings are up this year at about 40% of our tours. We are even getting lucky and have seen both species on several of our tours. We are particularly seeing lots of Bigg's o... read more

Spring recap – Basically whales, whales, whales!

May 22, 2017 Comments (0)

Wet and gray, rainy day after rainy day, April and the beginning of May were turning out to be a continuation of Vancouver’s never-ending winter. One big difference that helped keep our spirits high was of course, the return of whale watching season! As stealthy as they are, we have seen transient (Bigg’s) killer whales most days of the week. Quite often we were fortunate enough to encounter them on a seal or sea lion kill and observe the different roles required by each family member during a hunt. More than a few of these da... read more

Another Successful Whale Watching Season!

November 4, 2016 Comments (0)

Wow, what an incredible 2016 season!  This fall we saw more humpback whales than ever before! Humpbacks are a great example of a conservation success; since the moratorium on whaling we’ve seen these majestic giants return in greater numbers each year. It’s wonderful to witness the recovery of these magnificent animals. Of course we saw lots of orca as well, including families of both resident and transient populations. The gigantic Steller Sea Lions have been thrilling to watch as they wrestle each other for the bes... read more

Whale Season Continues!

September 12, 2016 Comments (0)

The tree lines are sprinkled with burnt orange and red leaves, the air is a tad crisper, and there’s sadness on the kiddie’s faces as they lug their book bags to and fro. Summer holidays are over here in Vancouver, BUT WHALE SEASON IS NOT! With many warm days left in our forecast we are looking forward to our fall whale watching season – which from some staff’s point of view is the best, most plentiful season for whale watching ;) All four of our vessels are running in full swing and we’ve been sighting whales on over 90% of o... read more

The Wild Whales adventure continues..

June 5, 2016 Comments (0)

Since our return to the Salish Sea in early April to begin another epic season of whale and wildlife adventures, we have been spoiled for choice with all of the animal action we’ve been getting, so it looks like it’s going to be an awesome summer. Since our 2016 adventures began we’ve already had very high rates of successful sightings, seeing whales every single day in May! The majority of these sighting have been Bigg’s (transient) Orca, but we have also been getting some early visits from our summer resident Humpback whales... read more
